Blacula

Music by Gene Page

At the very height of Black Power cinema in the early 70s would be natural, and inevitable, that genre would try combinations with other film formulas in cinematic experiences at least "curious".

The soul cinema tryed new ways with spy movies, mafia dramas, kung-fu fightings and even horror movies. Blacula (1972) is one of those classic oddities, forgived in his B glory to be appreciated as cult movie. Much more consistent than the movie, is Gene Page´s music. Blacula features large instrumental soul tracks as The Stalkwalk and Good To the Last Drop. Filled with metal breaks and essential electric bass lines as in powerful swings of Movin and Firebombs. For scenes in bars and nightclubs great pop tracks were added with vocals Hues Corporation. The highlight is the vigorous There He Is Again and I'm Gonna Catch You. In the rhythmic spirit of the work, shines the sad ballad Main Chance and its instrumental version, The Call, with unusual (for a soul soundtrack) combination of strings and harpsychord. Blacula is a clear example of a soundtrack that even connected to an era, is more interesting than the film for which it was created.
