Dawn of Dead

Music by Goblin

Composed by group Goblin in the best moment of his career, much of what was done pioneering in Dawn of the Dead inspired numerous soundtracks of European horror films.

Here the group has employed (slightly) the rhythmic/electronic effects that dominate popular music at the turn of the 80 (technopop). The soundtrack, if is not the best Goblin´s work, is at least very varied musically. The immediate interest is in the heavy and gloomy slow moving marches (in living dead pace). L'Alba Dei Morti Viventi is the main theme (the arrival of refugees to the shopping mall) and Oblio is another highlight in the same musical line. Themes rock oriented rhythms (or techno-rock) give the sense of urgency for sequences of action as Zombie and Zaratozom. The theme La Caccia and the claustrophobia of Al Margini Della Folia, are the most instantly recognizable songs (used in escape sequences and confrontation with the living dead inside the mall). The Cinevox edition also includes the source themes heard in stores and shopping facilities such as pop oriented Zombie Supermarket, the afro-rhythm Safari (the gun shop) and the comic foxtrot in Tosta in Faccia (the bikers attacking zombies). The reissue of Cinevox even includes an unexpected jazz track with a sensual saxophone solo. Once confined within the mall, the lounge pop music would be the only alternative sound of the characters and the soundtrack ironically "condemns" the listener to easy listening themes. "Shopping Mall Music" as the period concept.
