Mary Reilly
Music by George Fenton
Listen to Mary Reilly (1996) is like stepping into an unfathomable world of shadows. With a symphony seriousness rarely heard and predominance of strings, George Fenton music can immerse the listener in a monochromatic ambience of remarkable Victorian morbidity.
Few soundtracks achieved that effect as Mary Reilly. Even the nice piano waltz in Mrs. Farraday's seems retracted and steeped in shadows such is the strength of the other compositions. The combinations of low and high strings (light / dark) create the right dense atmosphere. Remark to Mary Meets Hyde, in which dark and motifs for cellos involve a fragile violin theme in a clear reference to the characters. The piano heard in Haffinger's is a brief moment of light and serving as a momentary relief it also reassure the darkness around. Depressed and of low light, Mary Reilly was one of the most interesting soundtracks in the modern cinema for its assumed chamber music integrity.
