L´Uccello Dalle Piume Di Cristallo
Il Gatto a Nove Code
4 Mosche Di Velutto Grigio

Music by Ennio Morricone

Ennio Morricone is possibly the composer with the highest number of reissues, compilations, difinitive editions and thematic albums in the music industry. Neither the Beatles had such reissue as the Italian maestro.

The reason is simple: the work of Morricone is multifaceted and even generic segments present subdivisions and possible new readings (or hearings). The DRG edition dedicated to the three first movies of Dario Argento is one of the best collections dedicated to Morricone music. With the tracks of L'Ucello Dalle Piume di Cristallo, Il Gatto a Nove Code and 4 Mosche Di Velutto Grigio on a same disc, the release brings the essential of the three soundtracks and offers a great sample of what the composer practiced after its consecration in spaghetti-western.

In Morricone music to suspense the extremes meet: beautiful romantic themes are antagonized by distorted suspense atmospheres, dissonant, almost anti-music. The track L'Ucello Dalle Piume Di Cristalo, for example, consists of a female moan accompanied by heart beats-like basis. Others are random associations of sounds, as in Paranoia (minimum notes of violin, flute and percussion effects). On the music for Cat of Nine Tails, the electric bass scores for suspense effect are directly consequent of Pierre Jansen music to Le Boucher. On 4 Mosche, the composer includes rock sections (the protagonist is a rock drummer). Even considering the variety and artistic scope in Morricone´s work, the frantic inical theme is really unexpected os his writing. Check on the Pod. 4 Mosche is the most melodic soundtrack of the three films. Even suspense passages are not as abstract as in the previous films and there´s interesting detach to the drums. Finally, the beautiful theme Comme Un Madrigale adds a transcendent touch to the set. The CD also has an interview with Dario Argento, translated into English in the booklet. An excellent introduction to giallos and the work of Argento.
