Naked Lunch

Music by Howard Shore

Summing the musical forces of the Howard Shore and Ornette Coleman, director David Cronenberg had in Naked Lunch (1992) perhaps the best musical soundtrack ever done for one of his films. Despite the little relation to the delirious novel by William Burroughs, Cronenberg boldly gone as close as possible in relation to the free writing of the novel.

Rarely jazz was used to score horror or fantasy films. In all times it happened the result was remarkable as evidence the visceral drunken spirit of Naked Lunch. Film and music have no similar in history. Both constantly match each other in its intricate structure. The underground ways of Mugwumps and Clark Nova Dies are examples of Shore's inventiveness in writing. Ornette Coleman, greatest name in free jazz, is present on the soundtrack almost as co-author. Some Coleman´s themes are integrated into the symphonic commentary.

"These two pieces [Midnight Sunrise and Joan] as well as the Charlie Parker recordings made by [Dean] Benedetti in the late 40's formed the musical inspiration for the score and became the foundation of our collaboration" - H. Shore

Original tracks by Coleman as Bugpowder and Writeman, sets perfectly the environment and beat mythology thet feeds the movie. And when the two musical forces combine as in Interzone Suite and Naked Lunch, comes a unclassifiable sound hybrid. Term “symphonic free jazz” can explain the joint creation of the two masters in their respective fields. Mysterious, tortuous and compulsive, the Naked Lunch music is a fascinating and groundbreaking work, such as David Cronenberg film itself.
