Profondo Rosso

Music by Goblin

Profondo Rosso was a watershed on the thriller segment. Rock music had already been used in Italian thriller soundtracks. Morricone had already made 4 Flyes on Grey Vevet for director Dario Argento with lots of rock in it.

But in Profondo Rosso rock idiom installed strongly and is very present in the movie´s structure. The intention of Argento was, besides seeking contemporary reference, to disorient the viewer with loud music in the sequences of violence and suspense. The effect enfolds viewers and characters in a sensory nightmare that has become the hallmark of the director. Goblin´s music, with its bass pulsating like a desperate heart, had fundamental importance in the visual puzzles of Argento and Profondo Rosso is the best example of the group's musical universe. The opening is a gothic-progressive with electric bass and organ in evidence. The hard rock of Death Dies accompanied the crime scenes. Giorgio Gaslini had composed some material for the film (which would be the B side of the original LP), more elaborate and referencing  jazz-rock (Deep Shadows, Wild Session), but it was Goblin´s work that gave a new landmark for the genre with their ambience and amplification. Profondo Rosso became a Collector's Item worth of expanded editions and a recent double issue with alternate takes and edited tracks.
