Revolver
Music by Ennio Morricone
Sergio Sollima was the "third Sergio" of spaghetti westerns filmmakers of the 60s. The first was Leone, the second Corbucci (Django) and Sollima stood out for his good work in films like La Resa Dei Conti (1967), Faccia a Faccia (1967), Corri Uomo Corri (1969).
The technical development of director is visible in this period and would continue in respectable giallo Il Diavolo Nel Cervello (1972) with music by Ennio Morricone. Finally in the crime thriller Revolver (1973), Sollima reached his high point in a drama/adventure that is among the best of its time. Starring Fabio Testi and Oliver Reed, the plot is reminiscent of some argument for a western with the protagonists cheating or helping each other all time. The score of Morricone is one of the most dynamic of his repertoire. The immediate focus is the main theme, the moving ballad Un Amico. Alternating the rhythmic tension of that theme (Revolver) to suspense passages, are included curious musical alternatives as Quasi Un Vivaldi, a merge of baroque (violin and flute) with rock rhythmic base. The tracks Un Bar and Un Altro Bar are acid-jazz swings (rhythms and organ) and Anna is an intimate theme on piano for the character of Agostina Belli, Reed´s wife whose kidnap initiates the action.
