Cosa Avette Fatto a Solange?
Music by Ennio Morricone
"Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world?" Jim Carrey´s ask seems to have been the orientation of Morricone in Spasmo, thriller directed by Umberto Lenzi.
A 20-minute suite called Stress Infinite aligns the most dissonant pieces for strings ever heard in a thriller. While Bernard Herrmann tried to suspend our breathe in Psycho with its rhythmic constructions for strings, Morricone in Spasmo was looking forward in string dissonance. An exercise in musical agony. On the other hand, and in the tradition of giallos, the melancholy main theme (Bambole) is one of the most beautiful of the composer.
The edition of RCA also brought the soundtrack to another thriller, Cosa Avette Fatto a Solange (1972), great moment of the Italian giallo whose success spawned a subgenre of thrillers about adolescents and prostitution. More varied melodic and thematically than Spasmo, the soundtrack alternates suspense atmospheres (Random, Raccapriccio) more accessible melodic constructions (Fragile Organetto, Cadenze, Fine di Solange). And best of all, the main theme (here I go again...) is one of the most beautiful of Morricone repertoire. The comment seems redundant and recurrent in appreciation of the many trails of Morricone, but Solange's theme really ensures position among the most beautiful creations of the composer for its lyrical and sensual strength.
