Sudden Impact
Music by Lalo Schifrin
Quite varied and full of climatic effects, the music for Sudden Impact was the return of Lalo Shifrin the Dirty Harry series after Magnun Force. In Sudden Impact, Schifrin´s music goes to a frightening atmosphere in the expression string.
The intense use of rhythms connects with the previous soundtracks as in Cocktails of Fire, in Ray of Light and on scratches hip-hop of the opening theme. But is the suspense in abstract and dark atmospheres of Frisco Night, Darkness or Stairway to Hell (electronic percussion and piano dispersed) that characterizes the score with its spooky nocturnal sound that benefited the film so much. Also characteristic of the period is the inclusion of electronics in synthetic rhythms and DX pianos. Some unusual jazz arrangements stand out as the sax in Too Much Sugar. There's even room for a jazz ballad You've Come a Long Way. The track Remembering Terror in suite form, resembles something from Rollercoaster, but in macabre atmosphere. Sudden Impact is a work full of musical ideas and also one of the creepiest of the composer. The only regret is the absence of the romantic theme (This Side of Forever) on the recording by Roberta Flack, heard over the closing credits.
