Th3 Pit
Music by Furio Valitutti
Directed by Filippo De Masi the thriller Th3 Pit (2013) works a connection between the traditions of giallos to the aesthetic of contemporary films.
Fillippo is the son of composer Francesco De Masi, veteran of westerns and thrillers of the 60s and 70s. Th3 Pit (available on Vimeo site) follows the naturalist line of shaking camera and dialog direct to the camera (as in REC, or Blair Witch Project) with footage captured by notebooks and cell phones to add "realism". One of the highlights of the production is the soundtrack by beginner Furio Valitutti. A great surprise in its reference Gothic/Romantic and the sum of musical quotes to the Italian production. From the gothic opening lines (Th3 Pit theme) with piano and a real string quartet (no samplers), the music explores many ways of reference to the classic giallo cinema. The lyric-ghostly vocals are of great effect in Wood and Dark Wood. Furio experiments at ease with diverse musical, climate and sonic possibilities: atmospheres for strings, piano solos, electronic abstraction. The tracks Wood Evil and Electric Wood even includes electronic noise (white noise) in its structure. Synthesizers and rock rhythms in Ivan bring the sound of the group Goblin to mind (impossible to avoid association) and solo piano passages reiterate the lyric-depressive atmosphere of the movie.
Best of all, even with the citations, references and easily visible models, the soundtrack has strength and personality of its own. The soundtrack and movie concludes with Fay, courtesy of Francesco de Masi, a soft-jazz theme extracted from New York Ripper (1982). Would Th3 Pit be the start of a new generation dedicating to redux the giallo cinema? If so, then we can wait for a new series of great soundtracks. Avanti Furio!
