Edward Artemiev
[1937 -] Russian composer of avant-garde and electronic music. In 1960, after completing his studies, Artemiev met sound engineer Eugene Murzin, a pioneer in electronic research and use of synthesizers, with whom Artemiev started collaboration. The discovery of sonic possibilities in the field of electronic fascinated the young Artemiev and irreversibly set his course of work. Mosaic, composition of 1967 is one of his first works, already exploring nuances of timbre and spacial effects. The composition Twelve Glimpses on the World of Sound, 1969, established Artemiev as an important name of the vanguard. Composing soundtracks for films of Andrei Tarkovsky [1932 - 1986] have been very beneficial in the development of his research and language exercise. Artemiev composed for Solaris (1972) and The Mirror (1974), contributing to the dramatic suspension and extended time, characteristic of the great Russian director. Artemiev also would do music for Stalker (1979), for Tarkovsky, and later Burnt By the Sun (1995) for director Nikita Mikhalkov. Later he would compose, for orchestra, the music for Odyssey (1998), directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. His son Artemiv Artemiev also followed solid career in electronic music as a composer, producer and manager of the label Electroshock Records, specialized in electronic music.
