Solaris is probably the first great film soundtrack composed using electronic resources. It's a rare case that served very well to the movie and had an even greater dimension away from it. The distinct personality of each of the six Solaris tracks (46 minutes) has an amazing skill to immerse the listener. From the abstract wideness of Dream to the mystery of Winter, the music of Solaris defies definitions. It also includes passages of rhythmic emphasis (in Station and Ocean) foreseeing what electronic rock groups would do in the middle of the 70´s. The hypnotic Ocean is also an antecedent of what Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze would be doing years later. In the track The Earth, electronic abstraction meets baroque tradition (after an organ piece, originally from JS Bach). Setting perfectly to the elegant mistery and temporal suspension of the Andrei Tarkovsky cinema, Solaris can be easily included among the most fascinating soundtracks ever composed for a film.
Not so "cosmic" as Solaris, the music in Stalker (1979) refere on folk acoustic strings as in the beautiful opening theme. The medieval ambience of plucked strings and flutes, suggests a curious nostalgic feel. The beautiful Meditation (with its eastern introspection) is one of the great moments of the album. The edition also includes a track with the spectral and haunting music of The Mirror. Also includes the piece Dedication to Andrei Tarkovsky, Artemiev´s homage to the majestic and mysterious work of one of the greatest directors of the cinema history.
