La Polizia Incrimina La Legge Assolve
Roma Violenta
Music by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis
Napoli Spara

Music by Francesco De Masi

La Policia Incrimina La Legge Assolve (1973) was a success that reshaped the Italian cop movies. Coming from social cinema of the 60s, the genre found in this movie the dosage of drama and adventure without losing the touch of social complaint.

The music by brothers Guido and Maurizio De Angelis, that oriented to the economy of the pop / rock format (moving on To the Sea or propelling action in Gangster Story), also served as a model to the genre. Commissioner Belli (Franco Nero) returns on the follow-up Roma Violenta (1975) also with music by brothers De Angelis. The soundtrack reuses themes from the first film as the rock Gangster Story, used for long car chase sequences on both films. In Roma Violenta the atmosphere, suggested by the sound registration more than anything else, is more efficient than before. The care in the sound recording is notable for atmospheric effect as in heavy suspense of The Other Face (multiple versions with bass and electric piano), or the drama of The Reason of the Just War (guitars with pedals). Two soundtracks detachable as classics of polizzioteschi available on Beat Records label.

"As the edition and photography, music is an indispensable part in a movie" - director Mario Caiano

Also available by Beat is the soundtrack of Napoli Spara (1976) another adventure of Commissioner Belli, this time with Francesco De Masi´s music. Instead of moving to rock, De Masi invests in the traditional jazz (many trumpets) starting in the main theme, Violent Life. Unlike other soundtracks for cop movies, the music dispenses sound volume to be effective in thrill or tension. More economic, De Masi´s music works over climates as in The Park, the Jail, the Justice or Smooth Thrill. Nice moments are the romantic Elena (over Autumn Leeves) and the sad beauty of the kid Gennarino theme (The Paper Separate, End Title). The CD features an video interview with director Mario Caiano conducted by Filippo De Masi, son of the composer and also director (Th3 Pit).
