Twin Peaks
Music by Angelo Badalamenti
Nocturnal and overwhelming, Twin Peaks music (1990) has an evocative force with its long instrumental pieces. Right in the opening, Twin Peaks Theme refers to some forgotten ballad of the 60s with their bass notes echoing through nostalgic mists.
The same feeling is present in the beautiful ballad The Nightingale sung by Julee Cruise with her ethereal vocals. Time is able to stop under the spell of Miss Cruise´s voice and his whispering sandman singing, which seems to invite to a definitive sleep. Some themes of Twin Peaks came from Floating into the Night (1990) the Cruise's album made in collaboration with David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti. Incidental moments, like the jazzy rhythms (to fingers snapping) of Audrey's Dance and Freshly Squeezed, refer to the 50s. In the abstract Night Life in Twin Peaks the feeling of time stopping is almost palpable, the shadows got denser swallowing the sounds, a change of direction seems an urgent need, but also a useless move: the conclusion with Falling – again with Julee Cruise singing a ballad of impossible redemption – leads to the beginning, concluding the work in a terrible labirynth feel.
